Snow in the San Rafael Mountains above Cachuma Lake is a rare treat, transforming the usual brown brush into bright white ridgelines framing the reservoir’s deep blue water. While the Santa Ynez Valley floor and Cachuma Lake sit in a mild, snow-free Mediterranean climate, cold winter fronts can dust the high peaks with snow between December and March. With heavy rains in the region, we’ve enjoyed brief views of distant snow-capped San Rafael peaks over the last few years, which typically melts within a few days.
Rain storms in February 2026 alone brought in 5.17 inches of precipitation at Cachuma Lake, 6.09 inches upstream at Gibraltar dam, over 4.20 inches at Figueroa Mountain, and 6.45 inches over San Marcos pass.
Enjoy these photos of the snow-capped San Rafael mountain range taken by nature center docent Colin Eldridge at Lake Cachuma on February 19th and 20th, 2026.
